The Benefits for those with Autism
How the Blanket Helps Those with Autism
Weighted blankets have been used throughout the medical industry for many years. Until now, the health benefits were unknown. Recent scientific studies have indicated significant reduction in cortisol levels, while increasing serotonin production for people with Autism. This promotes a healthy heart rate and circulation and promotes happiness and wellbeing.
DreamHug™ uses therapeutic methods of deep touch stimulation, or proprioceptive input, to improve mood, anxiety and most importantly, sleep. This is a highly regarded therapeutic method. Comparable to hugging a child, the pressure and density placed on the body provides immediate comfort and stress relief.
Most of our customers with Autism use the blanket for sleep, and during times of stress during the day. The deep pressure stimulation from the heavy weight of the blanket tends to have a dramatic, positive effect for those with Autism. Based on our customer feedback, we have found that those with Autism find the most benefit from the Dreamhug™ blanket.
Applied Behavioural Analysis EDU describes what happens when a weighted blanket is used for someone with autism:
“When you apply deep pressure to the body, the body switches from running its sympathetic nervous system to its parasympathetic nervous system. This is the so-called switch from “fight or flight” to “rest and digest”…Unfortunately, people with autism spectrum and sensory processing disorders spend a lot of time stuck in the sympathetic nervous system. Even when they do calm down, it takes very little to retrigger this system…As deep pressure is applied to the body, the parasympathetic nervous system comes online, calming the individual and bringing a sense of well-being.”
DreamHug™ is designed to hold you tight at night, simulating the sensation of being swaddled, or hugged. However - DreamHug™ isn’t just for sleeping! DreamHug™ is multifunctional and can be used while enjoying a book in bed, relaxing on your couch, during meditation or any other time when your autism symptoms are causing feelings of distress.
Engineered with breathable materials, the DreamHug™ blanket never makes you feel too hot or too cold. The result is a calming temperature.
Stress, anxiety and sleep deprivation are serious to health and well-being for those with Autism. Not only do these cause a decrease in productivity, but they also cause long-term health problems such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease.
The DreamHug™ blanket can be used a natural modality for Autism, Asperger's or Autism Spectrum Disorder, and can be a safe alternative for those who choose to not take medications. Always speak with your doctor before considering the DreamHug™ blanket as a replacement for medication.
DreamHug™ is more than a therapeutic tool – it’s a beautifully crafted, soft blanket you can comfortably use any day of the year.
A unisex grid-like pattern is distributed throughout the blanket to target pressure points all over the body.
The DreamHug™ blanket cover is made from a premium, baby-soft micro plush fleece and is removable for washing. The inside form is made of 100% cotton.
The Weighted Filling
DreamHug™ uses High Density Plastic Poly Pellets as the weighted filling. This material is non-toxic, odorless, food grade and safe to use as a blanket. High Density Plastic Pellets add weight while providing a soft texture to the blanket. High Density Plastic Pellets are manufactured using High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), which is extremely durable, non-toxic, washer/dryer safe, and pet and kid friendly.
